Half a dozen relatives and friends are spending Christmas with Neville and Belinda. The presence of children is always felt, though never seen.
Petty, and not so petty, squabbles break out. Rifled Christmas presents, unpredictable mechanical toys, a chaotically incompetent puppet show and a midnight love scene combine to make this a prime example of Ayckbourn's ability to blend comedy and tragedy and to hold the mirror up to nature with only the faintest distortion.
Ayckbourn reigns supreme.
